Bletchley Circle

The other night my husband and I were desperately in need of a new viewing adventure, since we had just finished the second series of House of Cards and were feeling a void. While browsing Netflix we happened upon a British series called Bletchley Circle. Since it was British (and we usually love British stuff) we gave it a go. We have just finished the first series and it is very good.

Bletchley Circle is about four women who worked together as code breakers during WWII in Britain. They were very good at their jobs and, although they were all very different as individuals, the ladies formed a close bond. After the war they returned to their ordinary lives. Having signed a secrecy document, no one knew what they had done in the war, not even their families. According to 1950's society they were just ordinary women, no recognition of their war efforts which had saved countless lives! Until ....... one of the women became obsessed with news reports of a string of murders taking place in the area. Thus begins a reuniting of "the group", who hadn't seen each other in years, as they take on the challenge of catching the killer (after being ingnored by the police).

What is unique about this series is that it is "woman centered" - that is the main characters are women and the story is about women - AND it is not a "chick flick"! It also gives a great insight into life, from a woman's point of view, in 1950's Britain. (This "woman centered" thing is a topic I never considered before ...... did you know that out of the last 50 best movie Academy Award winners, only 4 were woman centered?) Sooo...if your looking for something a little different to watch and you like British TV and movies check out Bletchley Circle on Netflix (I think that PBS also carries it). Below is a link to a "behind the scenes" video as well as a clip from the series.
